The School of Medicine is part of the ôCarol Davilaö University of Medicine and Pharmacy. It was given this name in 1989, in honour of the man who founded it in 1857.
Doctor Carol Davila (1828-1884), a Romanian medical doctor of French origin, was the founder of Romanian medicine. He laid the foundations of the military paramedical service and the public health protection services, especially labour medicine. Dr. Davila founded the first scientific and medical societies in Romania, i.e. the Medical Society (in 1857), the Red Cross Society (in 1876), and the Natural Sciences Society (in 1876). He also edited the first Romanian medical journals.
The School of Medicine is located in a Neo-classical building erected in the residential neighbourhood of Cotroceni in 1903. In front of the building there stands a statue of Dr. Carol Davila.
